Design numbering that matches the document
Begin by distinguishing the PDF page position from the number you want readers to see. A cover may be PDF page one but should display no number; set the first numbered page later while keeping the desired starting value. Formats with a total use the full document page count, which is useful for controlled copies and handouts. Odd, even, all, or custom targets determine where marks are drawn. Choose one of nine positions based on existing headers, footers, binding edges, and artwork rather than relying on a conventional bottom-center placement.
Use a readable size and enough margin to keep numbers inside the printable area. The color should contrast with the underlying page across every target, so preview both light and dark examples when the document varies. Numbering is drawn above existing content with a built-in PDF font and no network font request. It creates a new PDF, meaning signatures and some interactive structures may change even though page artwork is not rasterized. Open the downloaded copy, check the first numbered page, the final total, and any pages with crowded margins before publishing it.
For duplex printing, left and right pages may need different outer-edge positions. This version applies one chosen position to all target pages, so bottom center is often the safest shared placement. Use separate passes only after confirming that the resulting numbering remains consistent.
